Theft Investigation

Despite improvements in vehicle security and a fall in car crime overall, vehicle theft remains a major problem in the UK.

The latest British Crime Survey figures, published by the Home Office in October 2010, revealed that car crime was down by 16% to 479,000 reported incidents in the 12 months to June 2010

Where vehicles have been stolen and recovered, the locks, immobiliser and other security features are examined and the circumstances of the theft incident are considered to confirm the validity of the claim.

In the event that the vehicle is damaged during the theft, or is in an accident subsequent to the theft we are able to provide full repair costings or total loss values.

The method of vehicle theft has altered in recent years.  The most common method of car theft is keys stolen in a burglary. Thefts involving forced ignition are now much less common.

  • 37% of vehicle thefts follow keys being stolen in a burglary
  • 18% of vehicle thefts are as a result of keys being left in the vehicle
  • Only 14% of vehicle thefts involved ‘forced ignition’
  • Forgery or fraud accounts for 5% of vehicle thefts
